Conditional Sentence
Conditional Sentence is a sentence that express a wish, hope, plan, etc that may be possible, unreal or contratory to the fact or impossible. Conditional sentence is devided into three, there are conditional sentence type I (future condition), conditional sentence type II (present conditional), and conditional sentence type III (past conditional).
a. Conditional Sentence Type I (Future Condition)
Is used to express a wish, hope, or plan that may be possible to happen.
Sentence
Main Clause Conditional Clause (if clause)
Future tense (S+will/shall+V1) if + Present tense (if+S+V1(s/es))
Example :
I will travel around the world if I have much money.
“I will travel around the world” is called main clause and “if I have much money” is called conditional clause (if caluse).
Example :
I will travel around the world if I have much money.
“I will travel around the world” is called main clause and “if I have much money” is called conditional clause (if caluse).
b. Conditional Sentence Type II (Present Conditional)
Is used to express a wish, hope, or plan that may be unreal or contratory to the fact to happen.
Sentence
Main Clause Conditional Caluse (if clause)
Past Future (S+would+V1) if + Past Tense (if+S+V2)
Example : She would continue her study to Gadjah Mada University if she passed the final examination.
Fact : She can not continue her study at Gadjah Mada University because she does not pas her final examination.
She would stay in the palace if she were a queen.
Fact : She can not stay in the palace because she is not a queen.
· For conditional clause type II, “were” is used for all subject if in conditional caluse there isn’t verb.
c. Conditional Sentence Type III (Past Conditional)
Is used to express a wish, hope, or plan that is impossible to happen (contratory to the past).
Sentence
Main Clause Conditional Caluse (if clause)
Past Future Perfect (S+would+have+V3) if + Past Perfect (if+S+had+V3)
Example :
They would have continued to Gadjah Mada University if they had passed the final examination.
Fact : They could not continue to Gadjah Mada University because they did not pas the final examination.
